Looking awfully like a smaller 7 Series, a prototype of the next-generation BMW 5 Series has been spied, giving us the first chance to see the new 5er as a sedan. The prototype caught undergoing testing appears to be a plug-in. The extra "fuel cap" hiding a charger socket can be seen in the left front fender. Engines will range from a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline unit to the 4.4-liter twin-scroll V8 in the M5. US buyers are likely to receive a turbo four and inline-six too.

The current design will be more evolution than revolution, developing its premium, sporty appeal. A new lightweight platform, called the 35up, will allow for better handling, while thanks to a diet of increased high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber, it should also lose around 220 pounds when it arrives sometime in 2016.
