Genesis has been busy launching its new product onslaught with the next-generation Genesis G80 luxury sedan and the Genesis GV80 SUV. But this doesn't mean Genesis will neglect its current model lineup.

Last year, the flagship Genesis G90 was given a significant facelift for the 2020 model year, and now its smaller G70 sibling is about to get a refresh as well. The timing seems right since the current Genesis G70 has been on sale since the 2018 model year. For the first time, our spies have caught Genesis testing a prototype of the upcoming G70 facelift. While the luxury sedan is heavily disguised in camouflage, we can clearly see the G70 facelift will feature design cues inspired by the new G80 such as split headlights and taillights.

This should give the luxury sedan a more distinctive design to help it stand out from its German rivals like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. It will also sport a larger grille inspired by the flagship G90, which also carried over to the G80.

Compared to the current model, the updated G70 will be much lighter thanks to extensive use of aluminum. Power will reportedly be sourced from a new 2.5-liter SmartStream turbo engine with improved performance and efficiency. In the G80, this unit produces 280 horsepower, whereas the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder unit found in the current G70 packs 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

However, a recent EPA listing suggests the 2021 Genesis G70 will keep the current model's 2.0-liter unit, so we'll have to wait for official confirmation from Genesis. Like the current model, power will be sent through a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

While we've been given a sneak peek at the Genesis G70's overhauled exterior, we don't have any photos of the cabin available to share yet but the interior will most likely be updated with a larger widescreen infotainment screen and a 3D instrument cluster. The 2021 Genesis G70 is expected to debut in the second half of this year.
