Prototypes of the upcoming Volkswagen ID.4 have been spied over the last few months, but this time our spies managed to record a video showing the electric crossover on the move for the first time preparing to rival the Tesla Model Y. We get to see the ID.4 being put through its paces in the snow undergoing winter testing alongside an ID.3.

As with previous prototypes, VW has tried to disguise the ID.4 to look like an Opel, although official images released by VWearlier this month have already shown what the final production version will look like. At the front, the ID.4's slender LED headlights will look similar to the ID.3's headlights, while large intakes, a front bumper with plastic body cladding, and roof racks give it a more rugged appearance. Like the ID.3, the ID.4 rides on VW's dedicated MEB platform for EVs.

Volkswagen has confirmed the ID.4 will deliver a maximum range of 310 miles on a single charge. At launch, only rear-wheel-drive will be available, but an all-wheel-drive option will be added at a later date. Its high-voltage battery is positioned in the middle of the underbody to give the electric crossover a lower center of gravity.

Performance specifications haven't been confirmed yet, but the Crozz concept, which previewed the production ID.4, packed two electric motors producing 302 horsepower combined and could be charged up to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

The interior hasn't been shown yet, but expect the ID.4 to feature a fully digital cockpit that was introduced in the new Volkswagen Golf. Unlike the ID.3, the ID.4 will be a global vehicle sold in North America, Europe, and China, which means it will be Volkswagen's first ID. model sold in the US.

What we don't know yet is when the Volkswagen ID.4 will debut. Originally, the electric crossover was going to be unveiled at the 2020 New York Auto Show next month, but the event has been delayed until August due to the coronavirus pandemic. VW could still unveil the ID.4 earlier online, but we may have to wait until the summer for it to break cover.
