Digital rearview mirrors are becoming more common on a variety of cars, and now this feature will be available on the 2023 Ford Transit line of vans, including the all-electric 2023 Ford E-Transit Cargo Van. This is perhaps one of the best vehicles for digital rearview mirrors because there are no windows on a cargo van, meaning the only way to see what's behind is by using the side mirrors.

"Cargo van drivers often contend with an obstructed view of the area behind their vehicle," said Christian Kreipke, Ford assistant brand manager for vans. "You can imagine how difficult that makes maneuvering in a crowded parking lot or city street. The Digital Rearview Mirror is an invaluable tool for delivery drivers, especially for those making multiple deliveries every day."

Ford is not the only company to integrate a system like this into its vehicles, and the system itself is similar to what we from other manufacturers. A camera mounted on the back of the vehicle records footage that is then relayed to a high-definition screen that to show a panoramic view from behind, even though it's impossible to see through the rear doors. The mirror includes a switch to turn the digital mirror into a standard glass one, but this feature seems irrelevant in this application unless it's in a passenger van with windows.

Ford says the rear camera is designed for steady recording even in inclement weather and the wide-angle provides nearly twice the view of a traditional rearview mirror. This increases visibility, making the van safer and easier to drive. We've had plenty of experience using these mirrors on a variety of vehicles and we love how they can improve the driver's ability to see out of the back even on a sports car with a tiny rear window. More automakers should consider implementing these cameras, especially cars like the new BMW 7 Series with its massive theater screen the blocks the driver's view.
