We'll be taking joke submissions in the comments below.
For the last few days, Ford had been teasing something to do with the Ford Mustang. For a quick second, we thought it might relate to the Mustang GT3 car. Or perhaps even the next-gen Mustang. Not a debut, by any means, but perhaps some more info. We were wrong on both counts. Chalk it up to wishful thinking.
Right now, Ford's profile photos across social media have changed to show a new Mustang logo. It's not much of a change, mind you. It's now black, something Ford already offers on some Mustang packages. But the definition of the image of the famous prancing-horse-that-isn't-a-Ferrari has now gone all minimalist and 2D.
As it turns out, all the teasing was over a new Black Accent Package for the current Mustang.
Ford has released another pair of teaser images asking fans of the brand to help name the package, with links to a very, very simple website. On it, you simply enter what you think the name of the new Black Accent Package should be. We pity the Ford employee that has to sort out all the joke answers. There are sure to be thousands of them.
Right now, it's not clear what exactly the new visual package will change on the Mustang besides the logo and black wheels, per Ford's socials. Maybe that's all. However, a current package could offer a little insight. For the Mustang EcoBoost, there's an option called the Stealth Edition. That adds a whole slew of upgrades, like black logos, black wheels, and black accenting throughout the otherwise blue muscle car.
So, really there's not a whole lot left for Ford to paint black (other than a red door somewhere in Dearborn). The car itself, is, of course, one possibility. The teaser images certainly seem to corroborate this. The car in the teaser looks to be black, but that could just be one of many paint options for cars with the as-yet-unnamed package on it.
What we're curious about is the name. Logic says fans won't take it very seriously, and we hope Ford runs with it. Either that, or it'll be some entirely unoriginal callback to some random old Mustang from nineteen-sixty-whenever. We could see Ford doing a sort of bracket system with the top names. For now, we'll just have to wait and see what the brand does with fans' suggestions. Oh, and Ford said "nothing offensive or we'll tell your mom." So let's hope the brand continues to not take this seriously. We like it that way.
