The Ford Bronco is undoubtedly one of the most hyped cars of the past decade, and now that it's finally here, people can't seem to get enough of it. Ford has been hard at work keeping up with demand and is slowly introducing more special editions, and even a hardcore Raptor version, but Ford fans will always want more. The aftermarket tuning scene has already delivered some awesome-looking versions, but leave it to Ford to build the most badass Bronco of them all. After a brief teaser yesterday from CEO Jim Farley, Ford has taken the covers off the V8 Ford Bronco of our dreams, the Bronco DR.

The DR in the name stands for Desert Runner, which I no surprise since the Ford Bronco DR has been built to take on the Baja 1000, the same race Rod Hall and Larry Minor won in a stock Bronco for the first time back in 1969. The news that will get everyone salivating is that under the hood, the Bronco DR features a Coyote 5.0-liter V8 engine producing over 400 horsepower. Power is sent via a 10R80 transmission and electric shift on the fly transfer case (from the F-150) to all four corners. Independent electronically locking front and rear differentials and a 4.70:1 final drive ratio make the most of the Coyote V8's torque.

The DR's chassis features Multimatic Positional Selective DSSV dampers, high-performance off-road stability suspension, and Multimatic-designed billet aluminum lower control arms. This gives the Bronco DR over 55 percent more suspension travel than a standard four-door Bronco Badlands - up to 15.8 inches in the front and 17.4 inches at the rear.

The DR will tip the scales at a race weight of 6,200 pounds and feature an approach and departure angle of 47 and 37 degrees and a breakover angle of 33 degrees. To keep traction, the DR rolls on a set of 37-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 all-season tires and 17-inch beadlock wheels featuring an advanced Krawl-TEK compound and linear flex zone sidewalls. Inside, the two-passenger cockpit features a Multimatic FEA-optimized full safety cage, racing bucket seats, and a Motec digital display.

The exterior features resin transfer molded (RTM) fiberglass body panels which retains the bronco's four-door design, but luxuries such as glass windows and air-conditioning have been removed for weight-reduction purposes. The front of the car also features a tubular steel bumper and a single-piece grille and production round headlights. The car is finished off in distinctive red, white, black, and blue livery colors.

"Bronco DR is our ultimate turnkey off-road racing SUV, engineered to put enthusiasts behind the wheel of a desert racing force. This collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic continues the Bronco desert racing legacy that dates back to Rod Hall and Larry Minor's never-repeated overall Baja 1000 win in a stock Bronco in 1969," said Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance Motorsports global director.

Ford says that the Bronco DR will make its racing debut at the 2022 SCORE Baja 1000 and the first 50 units will go on sale before the race in the mid $200,000 range. If you have the money, we'd suggest investing in this future classic.
