We knew it was coming, and we even thought we knew what would power it, but the most powerful Ford F-150 Raptor from the factory has finally arrived. Meet the Ford F-150 Raptor R, a 700-horsepower supercharged V8 answer to the Ram 1500 TRX.

Let's not beat about the bush. The F-150 Raptor was already badass but is now even more so. Under the custom hood of the Raptor R lies the supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 found in the Mustang Shelby GT500, producing 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, making this Ford's most powerful Raptor ever. It generates less power than the GT500 but features a revised supercharger pulley to improve torque delivery in the low- and mid-range.

Raptor R is our ultimate Raptor. When customers experience Raptor R in the desert and beyond, it will make the hairs on the back of their necks stand up – and they’ll love every second of it.

-Carl Widmann, Ford Performance chief engineer.

Ford claims it has retained the off-road durability of the regular Raptor by redesigning the exhaust manifolds with a cast stainless steel design, giving it a unique oil cooler and filter, a deeper oil pan for tackling aggressive grades, and a new air intake with 66% more air volume. Adding to it all, a high-flow conical air filter sounds mega.

Performance figures have not been declared, but expect the 0-60 mph sprint to be dealt with in under five seconds if Ford is to challenge the Ram TRX.

If 700 hp isn't enough for you, a 2,000-hp supercharger kit already exists.

Power goes out to all corners via a 10-speed SelectShift automatic gearbox and advanced four-wheel-drive system, now recalibrated to handle the extra power and torque. A new front axle with a new carrier casting and aluminum-ribbed cover is more robust, while the aluminum driveshaft has a larger diameter to handle the torque. Inside the transmission, a heavy-duty turbine damper and four-pinion output assembly ensure the torque converter will sustain all the forces of the supercharged V8.

A dual exhaust system with a pass-through muffler and active valves enhances the sound of the V8, giving buyers the option of Normal, Sport, Quiet, and Baja modes. Drivers can customize these modes and the other driving settings through Ford's MyMode system and save a preset on the R button on the steering wheel for quick access.

More than just a monstrous V8, the Raptor R's suspension comprises a five-link rear setup with extra-length trailing arms, a Panhard rod, and 24-inch coil springs.

FOX Live Valve shocks are the secret sauce that makes the Raptor R supremely capable off-road, utilizing electronically controlled dampers, fed data by various sensors to continuously adjust to the terrain underfoot. With 13 inches of travel up front, accompanied by a 5% increase in the front spring rate, and 14.1 inches at the rear, the Raptor R can climb rocks or run the desert at high speed without fear of bottoming out. A set of 37-inch BF Goodrich tires from the factory are the finishing touch.

The custom hood is the biggest giveaway; this is no regular Raptor. The power dome is an inch taller than standard to aid in evacuating hot air from the engine bay. The Raptor R gets the iconic F-O-R-D grille, widened fenders, and aggressive bumpers, the latter all finished in black.

Stylistic accents are found in Ford Performance-exclusive Code Orange, with R badges on the grille, power dome, and tailgate. Buyers can also spec an exclusive graphics package to stand out from ordinary trucks.

Inside, Recaro seats clad in leather and Alcantara are finished in black and feature Raptor R embroidery, while genuine carbon fiber is found on the doors, dash, and center console. Code Orange stitching offsets the black.

Feature-wise, the Raptor R boasts the 12-inch SYNC 4 infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and over-the-air software updates. The Raptor R's complete suite of safety assists is tailored for off-road use with Trail Turn Assist, Ford Trail Control, and Trail 1-Pedal Drive to aid in all means of off-road excursions.

"We've heard our customers demanding the sound and power of a V8 back in Raptor," said Widmann. "That's not something we were going to rush. This supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is the ideal fusion of high-density power paired with the third generation Raptor's all-new rear suspension and shocks to deliver a one-two punch that goes far beyond the sum of its parts."

Orders for the F-150 Raptor R open today, with production slated for late 2022 at the brand's Dearborn Truck Plant.

Eight paint colors will be available, including Avalanche Gray and Antimatter Blue (both pictured here), and Azure Gray Tri-Coat - available for the first time on a Raptor.

Ford has told us that the Raptor R will carry a price tag of $109,145 (including destination). For reference, the Ram 1500 TRX is priced from $78,890.
