The power deficit is just too great for it to be competitive.
One of the most intense automotive fights that we are preparing ourselves for is the battle between the Ram TRX and the upcoming Ford F-150 Raptor R.
Unfortunately, while the new powertrain is highly anticipated, it looks like it still may not be enough to cross the line before its most prominent competitor in a short sprint race.
The Raptor R employs Ford's Predator supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with a power output of 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful truck the brand has ever come out with. Next to the TRX's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 delivering a marginally higher 702 hp, the Blue Oval appears to be fighting an uphill battle in this segment.
According to some information sourced by Ford Authority, the TRX's superiority is all but confirmed. Ford insiders have stated that the Raptor R will not match the Ram's 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.5 seconds.
No claimed time was disclosed yet, but for the sake of comparison, the standard twin-turbo V6 F-150 Raptor accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds.
The Raptor R is lighter than the TRX by 490 lbs, but this weight saving won't be enough to gap the Ram in a straight line.
As with all claimed specifications, we must reserve judgment until these two performance giants are tested in real-world conditions. Who knows? We may be pleasantly surprised.
Private tuners have already been rolling up their sleeves to close the gap on the Ram using the current F-150 range, with some firms pushing power up to 770 hp.
Once the Raptor R hits the streets, there's no doubt we'll see some crazy power increases shortly after.
Shelby has already shown us that a terrifying 900 hp can be extracted from the Predator V8 via the installation of a 3.8-liter supercharger. With this and some other drivetrain upgrades, its GT500KR can hit a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds. If this is applied to the Raptor R with its four-wheel drive system and taking into account the extra mass, we may see a variation of the truck that can take down the TRX.
