Ford Finally Reveals When It Will Unleash The V8 Raptor R

Teaser / 8 Comments

The TRX is about to get some real competition.

Ever since Ford released the third iteration of its popular F-150 Raptor off-road pickup truck, some diehard enthusiasts lamented the fact that it still used the same 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 as the previous model. Though Ford improved the V6's exhaust note (which we believe sounds better than a Nissan GT-R), truck fans will note that the Ram TRX's 6.2-liter supercharged V8 makes a more menacing sound.

We've known for a while that the Blue Oval was planning a V8 version of the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor dubbed the Raptor R, which will reportedly use the 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8 from the Shelby GT500. What we didn't know was when it would arrive... until now.

Ford has finally shared when the V8 Raptor R will be officially shown to the public. The Ford Trucks account tweeted what appears to be a fake movie poster, testing the Raptor R's debut. "Raptor R is almost here. Hope you like thrillers. See it first July 18," the tweet reads. The fake movie poster contains an image of a cactus on fire with the phrase "scary fast" as the title.

Beneath the cactus it reads, "Experience a new kind of fast with the Raptor R reveal July 18, 2022. Beyond fast. Scary fast." The evidence suggests that the Raptor R will produce well over 700 horsepower from its force fed Predator engine, likely beating the 702-hp TRX and certainly meeting the criteria for being called "scary fast."

There is less than one week remaining before the big reveal, but Ford has already given us a glimpse of the V8-powered Raptor R at the launch event for the Bronco Raptor. We got to hear the supercharged V8 in action, and it sounds incredible. There's less supercharger whine than in the TRX, meaning it sounds more like a traditional truck. We aren't sure what other handling and performance upgrades will come equipped to the Raptor R aside from the more powerful engine. When it arrives, the Raptor R will likely cost significantly more than the standard Raptor, which starts at $69,905.
