With the Ford Bronco debut in the rearview mirror, the new model is proving to be an enormous success for Ford, despite its many hiccups. The Bronco has managed to present the first serious alternative to the Jeep Wrangler in some time. It looks like consumers are taking notice. New data shows that Bronco customers used to be Jeep customers, and they're now more loyal to Ford to boot.

Moreover, the data suggests that not only is the Bronco eating into Jeep's once-dominated market, but Bronco owners are also spending more money than Jeep buyers to be there, and they're paying it in cash. Of course, that means these new Ford fans are also wealthier than Jeep buyers. Ford has simultaneously managed to bring buyers over from Jeep, then get them to spend more money on their cars.

However, while sales of Ford's reincarnated offroader have soared in the last nine months, much of the market is still dominated by the Wrangler. S&P Global's data shows that Bronco sales now account for 5% of the compact utility segment, up from just 1%. But Jeep still commands 8% of the market for vehicles like these. Additionally, the data shows that other vehicles in the segment, like the Honda CR-V and Jeep Cherokee have lost market share since the Bronco's debut.

New Bronco owners are both younger and have higher average incomes than Wrangler owners. S&P's data also shows the majority of Bronco owners are of Western European descent, with a very small portion of buyers being Hispanic, Asian, or African American. These wealthier buyers have higher average credit scores, with Jeep buyers eight times more likely to lease than a Bronco customer.

These high-credit Bronco buyers are able to keep their payments lower than Jeep buyers, simply because they can afford to get a better rate on their loan or lease. Again, that's supposing they finance the vehicle.

A final note on finances: Wrangler buyers usually have a much higher loan-to-value ratio than Bronco buyers- a result of Bronco owners' higher average credit scores. New Ford Bronco customers usually have a pickup sitting next to their Bronco. In fact, half of these buyers have a Ford pickup sitting in their garage, which says a lot about brand loyalty. Comparatively, only 40% of Jeep owners have a second one in their homes.

Given the relatively short timeframe from the Bronco's debut until now, we expect the data to shift over the coming months and years, especially as Ford is able to get cars into buyers' hands. Whether that means more lost buyers for Jeep remains to be seen.
