If truck buyers want to keep the gobs of torque that come standard on their open-bed vehicles, then automakers are going to have to find some sort of replacement for displacement. Hybrids aren’t too far off in the distance, but for the time being turbochargers are what run the show underneath the hugely popular aluminum-bodied Ford F-150. One of the luxuries of a turbocharged engine is that it is relatively easy to adjust the power output by tampering with the boost and ECU settings.
To stay ahead of the competition, the Blue Oval decided to do just that for the 2017 F-150. The old 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 made 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, enough to topple its 5.0-liter V8 brother that has to make do with 387 lb-ft of torque. Ford announced earlier that it decided to up the torque output on the EcoBoost to 450 lb-ft for the 2017 F-150, an improvement but still less than the 460 lb-ft made by the 6.2-liter V8 in its main competitors, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. However, as any good poker player knows, don’t show all of your cards until all bets have been placed. After the chips were put down, Ford dropped an announcement today that it had held back on its 3.5-liter EcoBoost’s performance figures.
In reality, the 2017 F-150 with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost will make 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to outdo the thirstier Chevy engine. If this wasn’t exciting enough, the boosted engine will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission developed jointly by Ford and GM to help cut fuel consumption. Those who need different engine applications won’t be disappointed to hear that the rest of the old F-150 lineup is available, including the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, the 5.0-liter V8, and the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, although none of these will come with the 10-speed. Just in case that wasn't enough, then you might want to hold out for the F-150 Raptor, which will utilize the same engine/transmission combo except with 450 horsepower.
