Focus ST owners will want to read this.
The only thing worse than screwing up once is screwing up twice, especially when the second error is made while trying to amend the first. But the business of building cars is hard and blunders are bound to happen, especially when the largest car companies can crank out millions of vehicles per year worldwide, making mistakes a matter of when rather than if.
Maybe it’s just Murphy’s law in action, or maybe it’s blind bad luck, but Ford Motor Company just has found out the hard way that sometimes, you have to issue a recall to repair an incomplete fix from a previous recall. The model in question is none other than the Focus and Focus ST, 58,000 North American Focus models to be exact, all built at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.
Affected Focus models are packed with Ford’s 2.0-liter GDI engine and were built in 2012 and 2017, while Focus ST models plagued with the problem were built from 2012 to 2014 and feature 2.0-liter GTDI engines. The problem stems from a "canister purge valve that can get stuck open, causing an excessive vacuum to develop in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank.”
If that problem manifests, customers might notice a malfunction indicator light turn on, inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability concerns, or loss of power. The original fix was designed to detect a malfunctioning canister purge valve, but some cars may not have gotten the intended calibration software, which was named "18S32.”
Ford is unaware of any accidents or injuries stemming from the issue, and the company will instruct owners of affected models to take their Focus’ to Ford dealerships so they may have their powertrain control modules reprogramed and canister purge valves replaced if necessary. If the canister purge valve does, in fact, need replacing, Ford dealers will also make sure to inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank, and fuel delivery module if necessary.
So if you are the owner of a 2012 or 2017 model-year Focus with a 2.0-liter GDI engine built from October 7, 2010 to July 23, 2012 and from August 24, 2016 to April 13, 2017, be on the lookout for a recall notice. The same goes for owners of 2013-14 Focus STs equipped with 2.0-liter GTDI engines built from May 3, 2012 to December 11, 2014.
