We've known for a while now that Ford is planning to revive the Maverick for a new generation. Built between 1966 and 1977, the original Maverick was sold as a coupe or sedan, but the all-new version will be a compact pickup slotting below the Ford Ranger. Ford hasn't released any official details yet, but the puzzle pieces are slowly starting to come together.

Considering it's smaller than the Ranger, we were expecting the Maverick to be offered with two doors and a regular cab. According to Ford Authority's inside sources, however, this won't be the case. Instead, the Maverick will only be offered with a four-door configuration and a SuperCrew cab, so you'll be able to bring the whole family along for the ride.

This perhaps isn't surprising since most pickup truck buyers favor four-door cabs, but it could be disappointing for those looking to buy a simple, compact truck with a regular cab. Ford also offers SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations for the mid-size Ranger pickup, and the full-size F-150 and Super Duty trucks are sold with a Regular Cab, SuperCab, or SuperCrew. Since the Maverick is expected to be around two feet shorter than the Ranger, you won't be hauling large loads in the bed, and rear passengers may not have much legroom in the back. Its lower ride height also won't make it suitable for venturing off-road.

There are conflicting reports about the Maverick's underpinnings. Initially, the compact pickup was expected to share the same platform as the Bronco Sport and Escape. If this is the case, it will likely be offered with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder or a 2.0-liter turbo-four. It will also be built at the Ford Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico, where the Bronco Sport and Escape are also assembled. However, a recent report claims it will share components with the Transit Connect, including its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive is expected to be standard, with an optional all-wheel drive system.

Pricing for Ford's new compact truck is expected to start at around $19,000-$20,000, making it a more affordable alternative to the Ranger, which starts at $24,110.
