The return of the Ford Mustang Mach 1 has been celebrated by millions of fans in the US and Europe. As a replacement for the newly retired Mustang Shelby GT350 and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the Bullitt, the Mach 1 is a formidable track weapon and even Ford admits it can nearly keep up with the Shelby GT500 on the turns. There were, however, a few complaints from the Mustang community. To its full credit, Ford listened and has responded.
The Blue Oval has just announced the Handling Package, officially priced at $3,500, can now be paired to the 10-speed automatic. Previously, the package was available only with the Tremec six-speed manual. The slushbox, which includes a rev-matching function, is a $1,595 option. The manual is a no-cost option.
"When we announced the return of Mach 1 this past June, we were happy to hear that fans of the Mach 1 Handling Package wanted it with an automatic transmission because we as a team thought it was a great idea too," said Nick Terzes, Mustang vehicle integration supervisor. "We listened to the customer and went back to make their ask a reality so now all Mach 1 owners can experience everything the Handling Package has to offer."
Also included in the Handling Package are adjustable strut top mounts and improved chassis tuning. From the exterior, these Mach 1s are distinguishable with a different front splitter and rear spoiler with a Gurney flap. Ford claims this produces 150 percent more downforce than a Mustang GT with the Performance Pack Level 1.
A set of 19-inch wheels are standard as well, measuring 10.5-inches wide up front and 11-inches wide at the rear, and wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. There's also the Appearance Package, priced at $1,000. This gets owners red, white, or orange accent stripes and black stripes on the hood and body sides. Selecting this package is the only way to get Fighter Jet Gray exterior paint.
The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will begin at $51,720, not including the $1,195 destination fee. Order banks will open this January and deliveries will begin in spring.
