Ford Mustang Mach-E Joins Michigan Police Force

The first Ford Mustang Mach-E police SUVs will be patrolling the streets later this year.

Soon after the Ford Mustang Mach-E debuted in 2019, it didn't take long for a render artist to reimagine the electric SUV as a police SUV. And now the Mustang Mach-E has officially joined the Ann Arbor Police Department's fleet in Michigan alongside the Ford Police Interceptor Utility based on the Explorer.

Michigan Live reports the Ann Arbor City Council approved the purchase of two 2021 Mustang Mach-E police SUVs last month at a cost of $93,000. The city's sustainability office is also putting $30,549 toward the purchases and Level 2 chargers will be installed for an extra cost of $5,000.

All-wheel-drive variants were purchased as these are more suitable for winter driving conditions. With all-wheel drive, the standard range Mustang Mach-E offers an EPA-rated driving range of 210 miles, while the extended range versions will last up to 270 miles on a single charge.

The Mustang Mach-E police SUVs are expected to arrive later in 2021 and will replace two combustion-powered police vehicles since the contracts require them to be replaced either every six years or after 80,000 miles. No photos have been released yet, but they should share the same black and blue livery as the Ford Police Interceptor Utility used by the Ann Arbor Police Department, along with an aggressive grille guard and blue and red flashing lights.

Adding EVs to the police force is a logical step as the city is making a big push for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2030. As many as 100 new EV chargers will be installed in the city this year, four of which will be rapid chargers.

"The Mach-E is an all-electric, small crossover vehicle that is new on the market. As a fully electric vehicle, this purchase is consistent with many of the city's established sustainability efforts including the Green Fleets Policy and the A2Zero Plan," said Ann Arbor's city fleet manager, Matt Kulhanek.
