Ford Mustang Mach-E Won't Be All-American For Long

Industry News / Comments

The Blue Oval is shifting Mustang Mach-E production.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is already not the most home-grown vehicle. Unlike the traditional Mustang built in Dearborn, Michigan, the all-electric Mach-E is assembled at Ford's Cuautitlan plant in Mexico. Ford only delivered three examples of the Mach-E in 2020 after a pandemic-riddled year, but this year should be better as the company recovers and finds new methods to build more cars. To satisfy global demand, Changan Ford will begin building the Mach-E in China for local customers, marking the first time a Mustang will be built outside of North America.

To be clear, Ford will continue to produce the Mach-E for a North American market at its Cuautitlan plant; only local market vehicles will be assembled in China where it will go on sale later in 2021. Localizing the Mach-E is part of the "Best of Ford, Best of China" strategy, which is aimed at delivering smart vehicles and technology to Chinese buyers.

Chinese Mach-E buyers will receive the same outstanding technology, including the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assist technologies with Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance functions. Ford says the Mach-E will be the first car offered in China with cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology, meaning the vehicle can talk to other cars and infrastructure to help drivers avoid potential hazards. Like the North American Mach-E, the Chinese market models will continue to refresh themselves with over-the-air updates.

As for the battery capacity, Ford is quoting an estimated range of over 600 kilometers (around 373 miles). This may sound like more than the US model's 300-mile capacity, but it's worth remembering that China measures range on a different testing cycle. China should receive most of the same Mach-E variants that are offered stateside, including a localized version of the GT performance edition. For reference, this high-performance variant of the Mach-E produces 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque and can hit 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
