Ford Mustang R-Spec Is A Supercharged Pony You Can’t Have

Special Edition / 7 Comments

Sorry, but this special-edition Mustang is forbidden in America.

Despite being an American automotive icon for over 50 years, there are some versions of the Mustang Ford doesn't sell in the US. The special-edition Mustang55 designed to celebrate the pony car's 55th anniversary, for example, is exclusive to Europe. And now we have the Ford Mustang R-Spec, which is only available in Australia. What sets the R-Spec apart is that it's the only Mustang that's being sold in Ford dealerships with a supercharger.

Developed in collaboration with Herrod Performance, the Mustang R-Spec has been upgraded with Ford Performance powertrain components, suspension upgrades and an active exhaust system. Under the hood is a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. Sadly, Ford Australia hasn't confirmed the R-Spec's power output, but says it has more power than the standard Mustang GT and Mustang Bullitt, making it the most potent Mustang offered by Ford down under.

In stock form, Ford's 5.0-liter V8 generates 460 hp and 420 lb-ft in the Mustang GT and 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque in the Mustang Bullitt. The supercharger has a 2.65-liter capacity and 12PSI of boost, enabling more power throughout the rev range with reduced noise. The system includes an aluminum high-efficiency intercooler and full-face radiator, fed by a larger front air intake specific to R-Spec.

Compared to the regular Mustang GT, the R-Spec sits 0.7 inches lower to the ground thanks to fimer Ford Performance springs. MagneRide suspension is also fitted as standard, which has a unique software calibration for the Vehicle Dynamics Module that adjusts the damping rate 100 times a second. A Ford Performance handling package also adds adjustable stabilizers that are 0.19 inches bigger at the front and 0.11 inches at the rear for greater control and agility. The R-Spec sits on 19-inch wheels and there are also black surrounds for the LED daytime running lights, while the mirror caps and the unique rear spoiler have a gloss finish.

Production of the Ford Mustang R-Spec is limited to just 500 units and each model will be individually numbered and badged. Starting at $99,980 AUD (around $67,471 USD), deliveries for the Ford Mustang R-Spec will begin in early 2020.
