Just a short time ago, Ford introduced huge improvements to the Mustang V6 and GT models with new engines: a base 3.7-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8. Didn't think it could get much better? For 2013, Ford has given their Pony Car some fantastic styling updates, additional technology and improved packaging. In addition, the Boss 302, launched just last year, has received the same updated styling. Beginning up front, all Mustangs have a new front fascia that has revised lower air intakes and a new splitter.
Ford says the new look offers a more aggressive design with a significantly more prominent grille. Functional heat extractors on the hood of the GT were specifically placed and designed to help move hot air out of the engine compartment and cool the engine. The 5.0-liter V8 will now deliver 420hp after the Ford team gained knowledge from developing the Boss 302. Buyers can also opt for a six-speed SelectShift Automatic that offers drivers to choose from fully automatic operation and manual control. There are also body-color rock panels that run along the car to give it a more premium appearance.
The rear has also been updated with a high-gloss black panel that connects the taillamps. Ford has also kept the sequential turn signal and the taillamps also deliver a smoked appearance. Also new are standard high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps on both V6 and GT models. There's also two LED bars accentuating the front headlamps and three LED ropes forming the iconic three-bar rear lights. Ford has also come up with a new wheel lineup that ranges from 17-inch to 19-inch wheels. The GT comes with standard 18-inch painted aluminum wheels and has optional 19-inchers with a gloss-black finish.
Another new feature are mirrors with pony projection light, which casts the image of the Mustang's pony emblem on the ground when the unlock button is activated. Both V6 and GT models also have optional leather-trimmed or cloth Recaro seats that used to be available only on the GT500 and Boss 302. Speaking of which, the Boss 302 is updated for 2013 with a new hockey stick graphic featuring reflective stripes, specifically recalling the 1970 Boss 302. Also new is School Bus Yellow paint which honors Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am championship car. The Boss Laguna Seca now has Sterling Gray accents.
According to Ford, "the reflective stripes come to life when lights hit them, similar to how they did in 1970...the new stripe follows the classic hockey stick motif by going over the fender and extending down the body panel." The '13 Boss 302 also shares the new front and rear-end designs with the rest of the Mustang lineup. Power-wise, the Boss still produces 444hp and 380lb-ft of torque and has a race-inspired clutch and a short-throw six-speed manual. The foglamp covers in the grille are now removable, which Ford claims will improve cooling during performance driving.
For now, official pricing hasn't been released, but we don't expect for there to be significant changes. The 2013 V6, GT, and Boss 302 will all be officially unveiled this week at the L.A. Auto Show and will arrive in showrooms early next year.
