But that doesn't mean you should start driving like a hooligan.
In Europe, you can buy several Ford models that are available with something called an Intelligent Speed Limiter. This feature was offered last year on the S-Max and Galaxy. The option was so popular that 95% of buyers selected it. Now Ford has decided to bring the technology to the Edge SUV. So what is an Intelligent Speed Limiter? When activated by the driver, this system uses cameras to scan speed limit signs and adjust the throttle accordingly. Vehicles with navigation optioned have the added benefit of improved accuracy.
Basically, this system runs in the background and prevents your car from breaking the speed limit. While this kind of sounds similar to cruise control, it's actually better because you don't ever have to turn it off. Stefan Kappes, the active safety supervisor for Ford of Europe says that this system "can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit." He says that "Drivers are not always conscious of speeding, and sometimes only become aware they were going too fast when they see the flash of the camera, receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement." This system would be perfect for teen drivers or anyone who just wants to relax without getting a ticket.
We agree that this system takes away a lot of the stresses of driving. Especially when you are driving in an unfamiliar area, paying attention to speed limits can be cumbersome. We would love to see this system get implemented in the US. Perhaps this technology will stop Mustangs from crashing at Cars And Coffee Events.
