Volkswagen is ready for its foray into the small-car market, and it has announced that it will reveal its production ready Up! During the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Up! is set to eventually spawn a full lineup, but the first models will be three-door hatches with four-seats. It will be powered by a three-cylinder gasoline with the optional diesel engine, and either a manual or twin-clutch automatic transmission.
The Up! is being built in Slovakia, and Europeans can expect to see them go on sale in late 2011. It was also revealed that during earlier stages of development, VW considered a rear-engine configuration in homeage of the original Type 1, but instead opted for the conventional front-engine layout. The electric variant of the Up!, the E-Up!, will also be among the first electric VWs to hit the market alongside a Golf and Jetta EV. The electric variation will be due out sometime in 2013.
