The upcoming BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe goes from concept to production and is expected to make its official debut in the coming months.
Originally debuted as the Gran Coupe Concept last year, the BMW 6-Series four door coupe is expected to begin production and make its official debut sometime in 2012. The upcoming 6-Series Gran Coupe will share the same wheelbase as the 5-Series sedan, but the Gran Coupe's height will about 3.5-inches shorter. The 5-Series, by comparison, stands tall at 54-inches. Total length will also surpass its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz CLS, by 2-inches.
The new car will also feature frameless door windows but will still have a B-pillar. To help reduce overall weight, BMW engineers used aluminum for the doors and hood along with special lightweight plastics for the front fenders and trunk. The 6-Series Gran Coupe will also be offered with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system which provides torque split between the front and rear axles. No specific date has been set for the official unveiling, but the Frankfurt Auto Show seems very likely. Photos displayed are of the 2010 BMW Gran Coupe Concept.
