A lot has changed since James Bond got behind the wheel of a Z3.
BMWs of all kinds have made an appearance on the big screen for several decades, primarily in action-packed films. Perhaps the most memorable appearances were in various James Bond movies, where models like the iconic Z3, the retro Z8, and the self-driving 750 iL served as the ride of choice for leading man Pierce Brosnan. More recently, Tom Cruise drove a doorless BMW M5 in the latest installment of Mission Impossible. Now, another two BMWs are getting prominent on-screen debuts. Both the latest iX3 and the M8 will appear in the action film Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings by Marvel Studios, which will be opening at cinemas around the world in September. The film stars Simu Liu as the superhero Shang-Chi.
The iX3's appearance in the new film comes at the same time as its facelift. BMW revealed the updated iX3 a few weeks ago and it received similar visual changes like sleeker headlights as seen on the 2022 X3, although the iX3 retains the unique grille and blue accents that are reminders of its fully electric powertrain. Sadly, the iX3 is still not available in the United States. BMW shared some images on social media of the iX3 as it looks in the film with an aggressive body kit and blue spikes on the grille. It seems to be specially equipped for off-road use in the movie, which was partially shot in San Francisco.
The other BMW to star in the new movie is the M8, finished in Melbourne Red, a color from the exclusive BMW Individual palette. Action sequences from the video above show that it's the M8 coupe that will feature. "Both take center stage in action-packed set pieces that showcase the power and agility of both vehicles," said BMW in a statement.
The Shang-Chi film follows another Marvel Studios release earlier this year, Black Widow, which starred the X3 and the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Shang-Chi will be released in US theaters on September 3, 2021.
