After a pretty decent 2020, Ford recently announced model year changes for its 2021 Mustang lineup, including the Shelby GT500 and the new Mach 1. Last year's Mustang sales totaled 61,090 units, making it the best-selling American sports car for the sixth year in a row.

Ford finished the year particularly strongly with a 14.8% sales increase in Q4, including a 36% increase during that period for the Shelby GT500 and recently-discontinued GT350. In total, the Shelby models saw a 14% sales increase in 2020.

The changes for 2021 include a new Carbon Fiber Handling Package for the GT500 and fresh colors for the Mustang lineup, including Grabber Yellow, Antimatter Blue, Carbonized Gray Metallic, and Fighter Jet Gray (a Mach 1-exclusive). Ford recently opened the configurator for the 2021 Mustang, giving us a great opportunity to check out these new colors and see how expensive the updated pony car can get.

We began by configuring the 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, the most powerful and expensive model available. The 2021 GT500 starts at $72,800 but we managed to price it up to $107,180 with every available option. To make a GT500 this expensive, you need to opt for Twister Orange paint - the priciest hue at $495. From there, add on a black painted roof for $695 and Absolute Black painted racing stripes for $10,000.

The new-for-2021 Carbon Fiber Handling Package costs $10,000 but we added the costlier Carbon Fiber Track Package for $18,500. This package adds 20-inch exposed carbon-fiber wheels, carbon-fiber interior trim, adjustable strut top mounts, Michelin Pilot cub sport 2 tires, rear seat delete, Recaro seats, splitter wickers, and a wheel locking kit. From there, the only other options are a $3,000 technology package and a $395 vehicle cover.

The incredible GT350 may be gone for 2021, but it's been replaced by the similarly-cool 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1. This new model starts at $52,720, but we opted to configure the Mach 1 Premium for $54,315. Twister Orange is once again the most expensive color. However, Fighter Jet Grey actually helps create the most expensive Mach 1 because it's the only hue available after equipping the $1,000 Mach 1 Appearance Package, which adds Ebony/Orange decals, orange brake calipers, and orange seatbacks.

Other options available on the Mach 1 include a 10-speed automatic transmission for $1,595 to replace the standard six-speed manual, Mach 1 Elite Package for $1,295 with a 12-speaker B&O audio system, Magnetic-painted wheels for $395, and a $395 vehicle cover. Fully-loaded, we optioned the Mach 1 up to $61,185. For reference, the outgoing Shelby GT350 started at $59,140 but could get considerably more expensive with options.
