Not all concept cars remain concepts. Sometimes they actually reach production, and Genesis has a pretty good track record of doing just that. The Genesis Essentia Concept is, without question, one of the biggest stars of the 2018 New York Auto Show thanks to its super sexy styling and its advanced electric powertrain. Speaking with Motor Trend, Genesis boss Manfred Fitzgerald stated clearly that he wants to see it reach production. "I'm pushing for it," he said. "It's not approved for production yet. We're testing the waters here."

Furthermore, Fitzgerald acknowledged nearly everything on the concept is totally doable, technically speaking. If the production go ahead is given, the earliest we can expect it to arrive is 2021 or 2022. That's the good news. What's still unknown is how much of the concept's design will remain intact. Hyundai-Kia designer chief Peter Schreyer did say the concept's butterfly doors could be adapted for production, but in all likelihood conventional doors will win out. It's also important to note that the Essentia is built on a unique, one-off electric platform, which would be very expensive to build for one production vehicle only.

However, Motor Trend further points out Genesis is already planning to launch a coupe as part of its six new vehicle lineup plans for 2021. Three platforms will be used for all six. What could very well happen is a production-spec Essentia go on sale, though not a pure electric, but rather with a hybrid powertrain. That's fine. We'll take that. Just leave as much of the concept's slick looks in place as possible. Extra bonus points goes for retaining the butterfly doors.
