Get Ready For A Product Onslaught Of Electric BMW SUVs

Industry News

BMW just trademarked a ton of names for its future EV SUVs.

Back when BMW launched the i brand with the i3 and i8, it said that it had no plans to build an SUV within the i range. Clearly that stance didn't last long and BMW is now planning a product onslaught of electric SUVs. Autocar recently reported that BMW has trademarked a series of names to help expand the i brand. BMW has already registered the names iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8 and iX9. BMW may just want to ensure that it covers its bases here, but this could mean it has plans for several electric SUV models.

So far, BMW's i brand hasn't really taken the world by storm. We think this may be because the only two i branded vehicles are a small hatchback and an expensive, mid-engine sports car. SUVs are clearly the most popular type of vehicle at the moment, and BMW needs to compete with Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, who have all announced plans to build more than one electric SUV. Right now, it is unknown whether BMW plans to add electrification to current X models, or if it will create all-new platforms with their own unique styling and packaging. So far we have only seen the X7 iPerformance as a concept, but BMW has confirmed that its first EV SUV will be based on the X3, as a rival to the Jaguar I-Pace.

BMW has been extremely active in securing names for the i brand. The company already trademarked the names i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9 three years before the i3 and i8 were even revealed. BMW also trademarked the names E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8 and E9, although it seems like BMW ultimately decided to go with the letter 'i.' It seems clear by BMW's actions that electric SUVs are on the way, but we'll have to wait and see exactly how many models the company has planned.
