Get Your New Ram 1500 with a V6 Diesel

Ram is promising that it's new 1500 EcoDiesel pickup will have best-in-class fuel economy.

Diesel fans in the US are finally having their day. Chrysler has just announced that its Ram 1500 pickup truck can now be ordered with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel. And it bases at just $25,295, including destination. The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is powered by that same turbocharged V6 diesel that’s in the Grand Cherokee, which in this case produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. For now, Chrysler hasn’t released official output numbers or expected fuel economy, although the former shouldn’t differentiate that much from the Jeep.

In fact, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is expected to return best-in-class fuel economy. Chrysler did state that the 1500 EcoDiesel’s emissions are 60 percent less than those produced by diesel powertrains 25 years ago and that, for now, it’s the only diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment. The sole transmission will be an eight-speed gearbox. Whether competing truck brands, such as Chevy, Ford and even Toyota, will soon offer a diesel option for their respective half-ton pickups will likely depend on sales of the 1500 EcoDiesel. And if it becomes the success Chrysler is hoping for, then a diesel truck revolution could be just around the corner.
