General Motors, which aims to become an EV-only automaker by 2035, has announced it's working with its dealerships across the country to install upwards of 40,000 Level 2 charging stations across the US and Canada through the expansion of its Dealer Community Charging Program.

The program was announced late last year, and, to date, almost 1,000 dealers have enrolled. However, the first community charging stations were installed only in Michigan and Wisconsin.

The program was initially available to Chevrolet dealers, but it's set to expand to include Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealers this January. The program aims to expand charging to parts of the country, specifically often-forgotten rural and urban areas where EV charging is currently very limited or non-existent. The stations will be open to non-GM customers as well.

And that's where dealers come into play. "Nearly 90% of the US population lives within 10 miles of a GM dealership. Our dealers are deeply involved and trusted in their communities and are well positioned to determine locations that expand access to EV charging, including at small businesses, entertainment venues, schools, and other popular destinations," said Hoss Hassani, vice president of GM EV Ecosystem.

GM has partnered with FLO, the Quebec-based EV charging company, as its charging station provider, and each dealer can receive up to 10 19.2 kWh charging stations.

FLO will handle the installation process, which makes sense since it's an expert in this department. According to the automaker, the Dealer Community Charging Program encompasses just one aspect of its grand EV adaption plan for America.

Other critical elements include launching a "broad portfolio" of EVs, such as the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and the upcoming Chevy Blazer EV. Providing accessible and reliable charging methods at home and vast public infrastructure is another aspect, and, perhaps most important, educating the public about EV ownership and how EVs function compared to gas-powered vehicles.

"GM is taking a comprehensive approach to help put everyone in an EV," Hassani added. "This includes great vehicles, accessible and reliable charging infrastructure, and free educational resources to help make the transition to EVs as seamless as possible. Combined, these efforts will manifest our all-electric future."
