General Motors does not need a Ford F-150 Raptor R or Ram 1500 TRX competitor because it already builds the Hummer EV, which makes the Ford and Ram look ordinary.

Now, before you load up your jumping truck with bricks and lob them in the direction of our offices, you need to know that the words above are not our own. Instead, they come from the global vice president of Buick and GMC, Duncan Alfred, who spoke at a recent media event attended by GM Authority.

Alfred was asked whether GMC was planning on building a rival to the go-faster, high-jumping trucks, and the answer was no. "I don't see that as really our position," said Aldred. "We have no plans to do that. When you've got a Hummer EV in the portfolio, which makes those vehicles look a bit ordinary, in my mind, I don't think we need anything else in that space."

Alfred is brave to throw shade at these two beloved trucks, especially considering all of the troubles experienced by Hummer these past few months.

Still, there are some common traits between the three cars. The Raptor R is equipped with the same 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8 as the Shelby GT 500, albeit changed a little to work in a truck. It produces 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. If you want something closer to the tri-motor Hummer's power, you can opt for the Hennessey upgrade, which produces 1,000 hp. The Ram TRX currently has 702 hp on tap, thanks to a 6.2-liter supercharged V8. Ram is reportedly working on a more powerful model, but once again, you can turn to Hennessey if you need a thousand horses.

The tri-motor Hummer produces 1,000 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. It gets to 60 mph in three seconds flat, easily beating the gas-powered trucks.

And, erm, that's really all it has going for it.

We know the Hummer EV can also jump, but the kind of air it gets is nowhere near as impressive as the Raptor R or TRX. For comparison, you can look at the images below.

Sure, the supercharged V8 trucks consume loads of fuel and couldn't be more annoying to environmentalists even if they ran on panda blood, but the Hummer isn't much better. It costs a hundred bucks to fill up at a charging station, and a study from 2022 showed that it's a bigger polluter than many ICE cars.

The biggest problem of all is the suspension setup. A YouTuber tried to jump a Hummer EV, and instead of doing so heroically, it just sort of came apart.

While the Hummer may be fast, it's a bit of a one-trick pony. The Raptor R and TRX are mighty, but people tend to forget that they cost so much because both are equipped with trick suspensions that allow you to do silly things. They're not just stupid fast but are multi-talented machines that can do pretty much everything but win an award from Greenpeace.
