Fastest Car is also getting a second season.
Motoring TV fans are going to be spoiled for choice soon. New seasons of Top Gear and The Grand Tour are airing later this year, and Fifth Gear is making a comeback in September after a three-year hiatus. And now Netflix has announced two new original car shows to add to the growing selection.
"Netflix drove full-speed into the genre of car culture and competition this year with the debut of Fastest Car, and audiences around the world connected with the compelling stories of these cars and the people who love them," said Bela Bajaria, Vice President of Content for Netflix. "Fueled by that response, we're partnering with best-in-class producers to expand our unscripted programming for motor enthusiasts and novices alike."
Car Masters: Rust to Riches is an eight-episode build series focusing on Mark Towle and his team at Gotham Garage "turn rusty wrecks into six-figure paydays". The name isn't a coincidence, as the company specializes in building custom cars for movies and television, as well as Batmobile replicas. Netflix confirmed the series will start on September 14 but hasn't provided any other details.
Hyperdrive, on the other hand, is a tournament series "where daring drivers from across the globe compete for the glory on one of the largest automotive obstacle courses ever constructed." Filming is currently underway for the first season, which will air in 2019 in a 10-episode run.
Fastest Car, the first original auto show to air on Netflix, is also returning for a second season. The first season focused on sleeper cars being pitted against some of the fastest supercars in the world, so expect the same formula in the second season. The series will go into production later this year and launch in 2019.
There's more automotive content coming to the streaming service next year, too. Netflix is teaming up with Formula 1 to release a 10-episode documentary in 2019 following the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship. Academy-Award winner James Gay Reesto, the producer of the excellent Senna documentary film, will be Executive Producer. An animated Fast & Furious spin-off show will also be released in 2019.
