GT500 Super Snake Widebody Debuts

Shelby displays the widebody variant of the 850-hp GT500 Super Snake at the Detroit Motor Show.

From one extreme to the other, Shelby has followed the introduction of the pocket-rocket Shelby Focus ST by debuting the widebody version of the 2013 GT500 Super Snake. With the widebody kit, upsized 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels can be fitted with the option of widening all four corners or just the units at the rear. The change is functional and cosmetic in equal measure, as the bigger wheels not only look the part but affords the Super Snake more traction when travelling at tarmac-melting speeds.

The "basic" package comes with the stock GT500's supercharged 5.8-liter V8 good for 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque, but if you so desire Shelby will boost output to a ludicrous, albeit street-legal, 850 horses. Starting with a stock Shelby GT500, buyers will get the choice of Satin Black or Gloss White stripes (with a limited number of base colors decked out in silver and blue stripes) and wheels in Satin Black or Bright Silver Metallic. Distinguishing features of the basic Super Snake package include a Shelby fiberglass hood, unique 20-inch wheels, Shelby and Super Snake badging and special interior trim including two-tone leather seats.

Further enhancements include a custom cooling package, Borla exhaust system, Wilwood brakes, and front brake cooling ducts. Not including the Shelby GT500 donor car, pricing starts at $28,995 for base models, and $39,995 for the high-performance variant. The widebody package is an additional $14,995. Production will be limited to 500 units and is expected to sell out fast.
