Guinness World Record Attempt: 8,000 Mile Trip with Kia Optima

A pair of drivers in a Kia Optima Hybrid attempt to set a new world record for lowest fuel consumption.

Kia will be partaking in an 8,000 mile road trip with the 2011 Optima Hybrid sedan as part of an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid. Wayne Gerdes and Chris Bernius will be behind the wheel for the attempt. Both drivers will cruise through 48 states in 16 days in the Optima. Both drivers have previous experience as fuel economy drivers. The trip will take 16 days and will cut through all 48 of the U.S. adjoining states.

Currently, the Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid was set back in October 2010 using a Toyota Auris Hybrid, which covered 307.58 miles while only using 4.53 gallons of fueling and achieving 68 mpg. The latest journey began on August 26th at Kia's production plant at West Point, Georgia and is scheduled to end on September 10th in South Carolina. We wish the guys the best of luck on their record-breaking journey. Photos displayed are of the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid.
