Gunther Werks is working its way towards legendary status in the Porsche world. Not only is its bespoke restomod based on the last air-cooled 911 model drop-dead gorgeous and beautifully engineered, but they're fast as well. The California tuning company's reliable coupe 911 also recently laid down a 1:30.99 lap time at Laguna Seca, beating Gunther Werks own air-cooled lap record and, on slick tires, and coming within two-tenths of a second of the McLaren P1.

Gunther Werks has now taken the roof off the coupe and added a little extra oomph to the race-tuned 4.0-liter flat-six. Neither of which are easy feats, but the result is the 993 Speedster Remastered.

Creating a speedster isn't as simple as just lopping the roof off and calling it a day. Gunther Werks removed the rear seats, replaced them with lightweight chassis strengthening, and added an integrated roll cage with a hoop for more rigidity and safety. That does mean added weight, so the tuners have offset that using a 25 percent lighter hood and hollow carbon seats. The wheels are lightweight single-piece forged aluminum, and the Fuchs-style center lock discs are an option. Gunther Werks hasn't released actual power figures yet but promises the 993 Speedster Remastered will deliver a "modest" improvement over the 440hp and 335 lb-ft of torque produced by the coupe's powerplant.

The 993 Speedster Remastered promises to be one hell of an experience, and there's a choice for customers to enjoy it with the low raked windscreen or without a windscreen at all. There's no roof, so the reworked interior is made using weatherproof materials, and the seats are lower than the coupe's to keep driver and passenger out of the airflow. Also swapped out is the original Porsche 911 pedal box, replaced with one that features "more ergonomic positioning than the OEM assembly."

Only 25 of the Gunther Werks 993 coupe are being built, and the company will only be making 25 of the Speedster model. However, don't expect it to be cheaper because it doesn't have a roof.
