Gunther Werks is known for a single-minded focus on the air-cooled Porsche 911. Effectively, the brand answers the question: "What if Porsche never stopped developing the air-cooled engine?" We've seen many a carbon-clad, air-cooled, stick-shifted Gunther Werks 911 by now, and this is yet another, though it may just be the coolest of the bunch.

Regardless of whether you think it is or not, this is Gunther Werks' Project Tornado, and it's a 700-horsepower tribute to the 993 Porsche 911 with a manual transmission and the coolest wing this side of an F-22 fighter jet. The Porsche restomod company unveiled its latest 911 at The Quail this week.

We'll come to the rest of the car later, but Gunther Werks would like you to take notice of the engine above all else, cool as that paint may be. That looks stunning in person, by the way. GW has once again had famed motorsports shop Rothsport Racing handle the building of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine.

It uses a "racing-derived flat fan" and liquid-charged cooling (for the turbos, this car is still air-cooled) paired with Motec engine management to produce the Aventador-level power figures. However, that 700 hp figure is only available in Track mode, with the car making "only" 600 hp in standard form. The car is, of course, rear-driven via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Back to the body. We got a look at Project Tornado at Monterey Car Week, and it looks absolutely stunning. It's tough to overstate just how wide the car looks in person. In addition to the widened track, Gunther Werks is also able to shave 500 lbs. from the 993's curb weight thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber.

That includes the roof, and basically anything that isn't metal or leather inside the car, seats and dash included. The wheels are also carbon fiber, and what isn't carbon on those is forged magnesium. Carbon aside, the brand also makes use of a functional rear wing to feed air into the motor, featuring the iconic ductwork of Porsche's "whale tail" rear wing. GW also manages a ram-air effect thanks to those 911 Turbo-inspired side intakes.

Inside, the carbon fiber wheel has controls for track mode and nose lift. The latter is handled through the custom suspension, which also has three damping modes for different driving conditions. That should add a nice level of comfort to what is otherwise a ball-to-the-wall track monster few could keep from merging with the nearest tree. Speaking of, wireless charging is available for your phone, and you can even mount a tablet just north of the beautifully machined shifter.

For additional streetability, Gunther's hollow carbon seats can also accommodate a 3- or 5-point belt system. Clients can also opt for a more cush touring spec 911 with carbon seats, a ducktail wing, a carbon fiber front trunk, and a re-tuned motor for a more chill driving experience. Gunther Werks makes no mention of price, but if you have to ask...
