Another person has been caught and charged for allegedly misusing coronavirus relief funds. Kenneth Gaughan, a 41-year-old resident of Washington, D.C, has been charged with fraudulently obtaining over $2.1 million through the US government's Payback Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans relief funds that were set up to provide businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Business Insider and US Department of Justice, Gaughan applied for funds by submitting false claims on behalf of several companies registered in his name. He's now being charged with forging paperwork and bank records and one count for each for the following: bank fraud, government theft, wire fraud, and money laundering.

But unlike previous coronavirus relief fraudsters, Gaughan didn't buy a new Lamborghini Huracan or Urus, Cadillac Escalade, or Ford F-350. No, he bought a $46,000 Kia Stinger GT. Far less subtle, right? Not exactly. Gaughan's stolen taxpayer money buying spree also included a $300,000 yacht and a new house worth $1.13 million. The feds have since seized Gaughan's Stinger and yacht and his investment and bank accounts. A civil forfeiture complaint against the house is also in process.

Not surprisingly, this isn't the first time Gaughan has been charged with embezzlement.

Between June 2010 and April 2018, he allegedly stole over $472,000 from the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, there are probably still more people like Gaughan and those other relief fund criminals who have yet to be caught. So far, more than $525 billion in business loans have been approved by the government and, with the noted exceptions, the money is going to those who need it to keep their businesses alive.

But there are always those who take advantage of government relief programs like these for their own financial benefits. Their greed is ultimately their undoing because big purchases like supercars and luxury cars, Rolex watches, houses, and a yacht immediately draw attention.
