Has The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Set A Sub-Seven-Minute Nurburgring Time?

Ever since the 911 GT2 RS was revealed as the most hardcore and most powerful production car Porsche has ever built, many have been wondering if the automaker can use it to reclaim the Nurburgring lap time record after the Lamborghini Huracan Performante beat the Porsche 918 Spyder's time. Thanks to its 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six producing 690 horsepower, the GT2 RS can sprint from 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of over 200 mph. Porsche's motorsport boss was confident it could beat the record, as was Mark Webber.

A new report by Bridge to Gantry claims that the GT2 RS lapped around the Nurburgring in under seven minutes a few days ago. While it hasn't been verified yet, Bridge to Gantry suggests that the GT2 RS looked like it was on course to beat the Huracan Performante as it ripped around the 'Ring. Porsche seemed to be taking the record attempt very seriously, spending several evenings trying to set a new lap record. Remember when the automaker said Nurburgring lap times aren't a priority? The first night wasn't successful, as locals reported that wet conditions prevented the Porsche from setting a time under seven minutes. Conditions were much more ideal the second night, however.

Photos taken from the record attempt show the GT2 RS at the start and end of the lap. According to Bridge to the Gantry, there were only six minutes and 56 seconds between them, which would make the GT2 RS faster than the 918 Spyder around the Nurburgring. They also note that the photo was taken a few seconds after the GT2 crossed the line, meaning the time is more likely to be closer to six minutes and 54 seconds which would set a new production car record. They even suggest that more speed could be extracted. It's still not official confirmation, but don't forget that Mark Webber said he hit 209 mph at the Nurburgring in the GT2 RS, so it doesn't seem too far-fetched.
