In a rolling race, it's easily quicker than a Porsche 911 Turbo S.
Hennessey Performance is at it again. It was only weeks ago that the horsepower-obsessed tuner revealed its HPE1000 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock and now the team has come up with what could be considered that car's direct competitor: the Hennessey Venom 1000 package for the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
Of course, the stock GT500 is no slouch with outputs of 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque from its 5.2-liter supercharged V8. The Venom 1000 elevates those numbers to an insane 1,000 hp and 850 lb-ft, although you'll need E85 gas to get the most out of it.
With 93 octane pump gas, the output goes down to a still incredible 900 hp. The Hennessey team made lots of changes to make these figures possible, including upgrades for the heavy duty supercharger belt, the high flow fuel injectors, and the intercooler cooling brick. An air/oil separator system and revised calibration of the transmission also form part of the changes.
To remind eagle-eyed motorists of what's just pulled up alongside them, there are special Venom 1000 exterior badges. With the full 1000 hp, the Venom 1000 should improve on the stock model's 3.3-second 0-60 mph sprint, provided the rear tires alone can offer enough traction.
In a rolling race from around 50-60 mph that is a better display of the tuned Mustang's abilities, Hennessey put the Venom 1000 up against a Porsche 911 Turbo S and the modified Mustang unsurprisingly left the 911 behind. Quite simply, this Mustang is a beast once it's up to speed and when traction isn't an issue. Of course, the supercharger whine coupled with the deep rumble of the V8 is a duet that never sounds out of tune.
Hennessey sells the Venom 1000 upgrade with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty and serial numbered plaques, while installation is included as well.
