Just last week, rumors were seemingly confirmed that the next-generation 2021 Kia Optima will receive a name change, switching from the Optima name to the K5 moniker. Kia uses K5 and other K-related names in markets outside of the United States, but aside from the K900 (which is called the K9 in other markets), this would be the first time this nomenclature would be used here.
We expect Kia to reveal the 2021 K5 (or Optima) soon with a sporty GT variant set to appear as the range-topper. Some information about the K5 GT was already known due to its similarity with the upcoming Hyundai Sonata N-Line but leaked images have now revealed even more details.
The leaked images were taken in California, meaning this is likely a US-spec car. Unlike the last test mule that was spotted in The Golden State, this one was completely de-badged, likely to throw off the rumors about it being called a K5. This is clearly the sportier GT model and not a base model because it features an aggressive rear diffuser with some hot-looking quad exhaust tips. The single frontal image shows a mostly camouflaged car and based on the wheel design, it might actually show the standard K5 and not the GT model.
A leaked image of the interior shows that the next-generation K5 will adopt a dual-screen layout with one screen handling the gauge functions and the other operating infotainment duties. A rotating knob replaces the old-school mechanical gear lever on base models but the GT model is expected to use the same T-grip shifter found on lower trims of the Stinger. Under the hood, we expect to see a new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder sending around 291 horsepower out to an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive is likely but the GT model may be available with all-wheel-drive.
