For the first time in its model history, the Toyota RAV4 is getting the TRD Off-Road treatment. The rugged RAV4 was announced earlier this year, but pricing details were kept under wraps. But thanks to leaked order guides obtained by CarsDirect, we now know the 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road will cost $36,300, a hefty $9,330 premium over the entry-level RAV4 LE that starts at $26,970.

It's also $2,225 more expensive than the RAV4 Adventure, which starts at $34,075. However, the TRD Off-Road isn't the most expensive version of the 2020 RAV4: that would be the range-topping RAV4 Limited, which starts at $36,900 when equipped with all-wheel drive.

The TRD's starting price is only $300 more expensive than a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, and you get more advanced safety equipment as standard such as automatic emergency braking. Equipping the Trailhawk with the same tech would raise the price to over $40,000.

Based on the Adventure trim, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road boasts some significant upgrades to justify the higher cost and make the SUV more capable off-road. The retuned suspension is inspired by the Rally RAV4 racing team led by Ryan Millen and the model also gets Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires with 18-inch matte-black TRD alloy wheels. Other modifications include retuned coil springs, re-valved twin-tube shocks featuring internal rebound springs, and new bump stops to improve body control.

Visually, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road features standard high-rise roof rails, large over-fenders, a more aggressive bumper and grille designs, and a TRD-exclusive two-tone color combination of Magnetic Gray Metallic with an Ice Edge roof. Other available colors include Ruby Flare Pearl, Super White, Midnight Black, and Lunar Rock. The latter two colors can be combined with the Ice Edge roof.

Inside, the interior features red contrasting stitching, unique trim, and the TRD logo embedded in the front headrests, floor mats, and rear cargo mat. Like all other trims, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower, paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox
