Lexus is officially entering the all-electric crossover luxury segment in the very near future. Introducing the Lexus RZ, previewed here for the first time. Over a year ago we reported that Lexus filed a trademark application for the RZ 450e nameplate, so we knew this model was coming at some point. Like the also new Toyota bZ4X, the RZ rides on the Japanese automaker's global e-TNGA platform.

According to Lexus, the RZ "has been designed to deliver an incredible driving experience that will define a new standard for BEV driving combining Lexus level comfort with superior dynamic performance."

Unlike the Subaru Solterra, the RZ's exterior and interior styling will look dramatically different than that of the bZ4X. Familiar exterior styling bits will include the somewhat still controversial spindle grille and those L-shaped taillights connected by a single light strip.

One thing we noticed about the front grille is those air inlets not found on combustion-engined models. EVs very much require cooling. The crossover also has a coupe-like silhouette with a strong character line beginning at the front wheel arches and extending up through the rear door handles. Lexus hasn't said anything about output, but chances are the RZ and bZ4X will share many components.

As a reminder, the bZ4X produces up to 215 horsepower thanks to its 71.4 kWh battery. With the optional AWD, the bZ4X and Solterra (which has standard AWD) can travel up to an estimated 220 miles on a single charge. Lexus has not said just yet when it'll fully reveal the RZ, but we can expect it to happen soon. In all likelihood, the Lexus RZ will go on sale in the US and elsewhere as a 2023 model.

The bZ4X is expected to be priced from the high $30,000 range before the federal tax credit and other state-by-state incentives. The RZ will probably have at least a $10k premium and will face off directly against the Audi Q4 e-tron.
