Here's Proof Genesis Wanted A G70 Coupe

Design / Comments

This would make the fight with BMW a lot closer.

Back in 2019, we considered the idea of the Genesis G70 becoming a coupe. That was before the current design language, which is arguably even more gorgeous, and we thought it would look pretty damn good. Then, yesterday, Genesis revealed the G70 Shooting Brake and - insert expletive here - it looks epic.

With stunning design and excellent underpinnings, BMW should be worried. But here's the good and bad news: Genesis was already thinking about a G70 coupe on the pre-facelift model. That's bad news because it clearly never came to fruition, but the fact that Genesis has allowed us to see its past musings on such a car could suggest that the company wants to know how we feel about it.

The above screenshots from the attached press conference offer us a glimpse at the potential product's design, and although they're not very detailed, it's clear that such a car would be quite the looker. We know that Genesis can design a gorgeous coupe from its recent X Concept, and the brand's product planning director, Ricky Lao, has confidently claimed that the company is capable of taking on the best the world has to offer.

"Our boundaries are limitless in terms of product. High performance is an area that seems to resonate with a lot of luxury customers." Having heard this, it's not a great stretch to imagine Genesis creating a rival to the less-than-pretty BMW 4 Series.

When the X Concept was revealed, Genesis said that there were no plans to put it into production, but the fact that the automaker has considered the idea of a G70 coupe in the past could mean that Genesis is simply waiting for us as the car-buying public to express more of an interest in the car.

On the other hand, South Korea's designers may just be showing off and teasing us with what they're capable of. Either way, these sketches confirm that Genesis is not looking to stagnate anytime soon. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi: be warned - Genesis wants a bigger slice of your pie.
