The BMW M8 Competition is the most powerful two-door sports coupe that the marque currently builds. The massively powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine under the hood has phenomenal peak outputs of 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, ensuring that over 4,000 pounds of leather, metal, and carbon fiber get to 60 mph in only three seconds.

But the M8 Competition's straight-line speed is no secret, especially now that the quickest BMWs use the brand's M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. What's less of an unknown is whether the M8 can still hang with a Porsche 911 through the corners, and now we've got a clearer idea of that after Sport Auto took the Competition for a hot lap on the Nurburgring.

We'll get straight to the point, then: the M8 Competition set a brilliant time of 7:32.79 minutes. Well, for some perspective, the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S can reportedly get around the iconic circuit in a time of 7:25. Although this seems like a clear victory for the Porsche, which 'only' has 443 hp, the 911 does weigh over 900 lbs less than the M8, which remains a more GT-oriented coupe.

Still, the M8 Competition's time rates it as one of the quickest BMWs ever. The much lighter and more focused M4 GTS is ahead with a time of 7:27.88, but the M8 Competition was faster than the current BMW M5, and most of the cars ahead of the M8 on the list aren't ultra-luxurious coupes that can seat four.

The M8 here was driven by Sport Auto's Christian Gebhardt. At around the 7:56 mark in the video, it appears that Gebhardt's mobile phone began to ring, just as the BMW was exceeding a speed of over 180 mph. Wisely, Gebhardt elected not to take the call, instead choosing to focus on the very important task at hand.

The M8 remains composed throughout most of the lap, and its lap time is especially good when you consider that it was a journalist behind the wheel and that the coupe was riding on its regular Pirelli P Zero road tires. So yes, the M8 is about a lot more than munching up the miles on the highway - the big coupe can do the twisty stuff too.
