The mid-size truck segment is heating up in North America, with Toyota updating the Tacoma for the 2020 model year and Ford, not one to miss out on a promising segment, reintroducing the Ranger for 2019.

GM has noticed, and it's responded in kind by updating its popular Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon for the 2021 model year. But just as important as what's been announced about the refreshed mid-size trucks is something that went unmentioned; according to GM's 2021 Fleet Order Guide, there's mention of a dealer-installed suspension leveling kit option, LPO Code SQS.

This is perfect if you can't get your hands on a Colorado ZR2.

The Fleet Order Guide doesn't go into complete detail on the kit, such as price, but Ford's leveling kits for the F-150 and Ranger 4x4 models give us some indication of what to expect. Available through the Ford Performance Parts catalog, Ford's kits ship with specially tuned Fox dampers, vehicle-specific upper front mounts with NVH-isolating poly bushings, and revised front coil springs that raise the nose of the truck to level it with the rear.

The cost for the Ford unit is $1,495 before installation, and it's good for a 21-percent improvement in approach angle, with a 10-percent improvement in breakover angle.

GM's new kit for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will likely take a similar approach, although it seems as though availability will be a bit more limited. The Fleet Order Guide lists the Colorado 4×4 Work Truck, 4×4 LT, 4×2 Z71, and 4×4 Z71 as compatible applications, but of the 2021 GMC Canyon lineup, only the AT4 trim is mentioned.

Of course, for die-hard off-roaders, there already exists the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and that model isn't expected to go away anytime soon. But not everyone is ready to drop in excess of $40,000 for a mid-size truck, and for them, GM's new leveling kit for the Colorado and Canyon might just be perfect.
