After a long delay, it's almost here.
The Genesis G70 sedan has helped the Korean automaker have a successful 2019 but the introduction of an SUV will doubtless give sales a turbo boost. The Genesis GV80 SUV, one of the industry's worst-kept secrets, has been leaked several times after being spotted undergoing testing. And according to Auto Post Korea, the GV80 was delayed but will finally make its debut on January 15, 2020. The outlet also reports that Genesis will release the first official teasers for the SUV on December 23, 2019.
CarBuzz reached out to a Genesis spokesperson to gain confirmation on this reveal date. We were told Genesis "can neither confirm nor deny at this point." So that's a yes then.
The GV80 is set to be a mid-size luxury SUV with similar proportions to the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It will be offered in five- or seven-seat configurations and ride on the same platform as the upcoming, next-generation G80 sedan. Thanks to even more leaks, we know what will sit under the hood of the GV80. The base engine is reported to be a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 304 horsepower, which should be a more powerful version of the unit found in the upcoming Hyundai Sonata N-Line and Kia Optima GT.
The more powerful engine choice will be a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 380 hp and some markets will have the option of a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six with 278 hp. With the smaller engine, 0-60 mph should take around 6.7 seconds while the V6 should take around 5.7 seconds. Rear-wheel-drive will come standard but all-wheel-drive will also be available.
Production of the GV80 has reportedly already begun in Korea, meaning it won't be long before we see the first SUV model from Genesis. Along with the GV80, the brand will reveal an updated G80 followed by a smaller SUV model called the GV70.
