High-Performance Chevy Sonic is Very Possible

Hot Hatch

All of the ingredients are in place, only a signature is needed to make it official.

Now that pocket rockets like the Ford Fiesta ST are hitting the US streets, competing automakers are more keen than ever to offer an appropriate alternative. Perhaps no other brand more anxious to get on the ball here is Chevrolet, who just so happens to have a solid hatchback of its own. The new Sonic, especially the RS, has received plenty of praise ever since it first went on sale. However, the Sonic RS is still underpowered when compared directly with the Fiesta ST and its 197 horsepower turbo four.

The Fiat 500 Abarth has 160 hp, but the Sonic RS has just 138 hp. GM North American President Mark Reuss is all in favor of doing something about that. "We’ve got the ride-and-handling vehicle dynamics for it...and I’d love to do that," Reuss recently stated at the LA Auto Show. Obviously nothing is official yet, but the pocket rocket market is something Chevy needs to be a part of.
