Hofele creates a sexier SUV without resorting to tacky add-ons.
Not all Mercedes tuners are cut from the same cloth. On the one end of the spectrum, there's Lumma Design that did this to the Mercedes-AMG G63. On the other hand, there is Hofele Design, with a more subtle approach to enhancing cars bearing the three-pointed star.
Hofele has already created classy versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the GLE-Coupe, and the latest recipient of the tuner's efforts is the AMG GLE 53 Coupe, which sits just below the fire-breathing AMG GLE 63 Coupe in the range. Called the HGLE 53 Coupe by Hofele, the tasteful exterior and interior styling bits make for one rather fetching coupe-SUV.
Outside, this special GLE 53 is finished in two-tone paintwork, with Selenite Gray over Obsidian Black. The standard Panamericana grille is altered with chrome slats that are less rounded, in addition to the Hofele badge. The front bumper has also been subtly restyled, with different detailing surrounding the lower air intakes.
Stunning 22-inch Mythos multi-spoke wheels won't be easy to clean but they look fantastic. At the back, we spotted a new chrome strip between the taillight clusters, while the quad-exit exhaust outlets remain.
Our only criticism is that the crossover is hard to tell apart from Hofele's standard HGLE Coupe.
The standard GLE 53 cabin is already a special place to be, but this one boasts a decadent Hofele Sport Design perforated leather finish on the seats and doors, with a mix of Nappa leather and Alcantara. The combination of black and Pepper Red creates a suitably sporty ambiance. More Hofele touches are to be found on the door sills and the door locks, which play host to the tuner's logo.
A glossy trunk floor is another premium touch that lifts this version above the stock GLE 53. In the YouTube video above, a price of €134,000 is indicated for this lavish crossover, which translates to around $158,000 at current exchange rates. That's double the price of a standard AMG GLE 53 Coupe, which begins at $76,500 in the US.
As much as we love what Hofele has done here, we'd rather spend that kind of cash on a GLE 63 S Coupe and load it up with some tempting options, while taking advantage of another 174 horsepower over and above the 53's 429-hp output.
