The classic sold for $9.9 million.

This incredible 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K just set the record for being the most expensive car ever sold during Arizona auction week. At RM Sotheby's auction in Arizona, one bidder bought the classic for the price of $9.9 million. The 540K is regarded as one of the finest interwar cars ever made and is just one of a handful of models still in existence. Only 419 units were built and the cars went for roughly $13,000, which makes it the Rolls-Royce Dawn of its time period. These beauties are extremely rare and prices have gone through the roof.

The 540K that crossed the auction block is an early pre-production model and went on sale before in 1989. The red model is the most expensive 540K Special Roadster ever built and will surely appreciate in value over time. The vehicle can be traced back to its original owner-Reginald Sinclair-the heir to the Corning glass fortune. While the classic broke records, the vehicle was expected to go for between $10 million and $13 million. However, $9.9 million is enough to make it the most valuable car ever sold during Arizona auction week by beating the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. Since when is a Mercedes-Benz more valuable than a Ferrari?
