The Japanese automaker has made millions of cars in the US.
At the end of 2019, Honda enjoyed a major milestone when its factory in East Liberty, Ohio celebrated its 30th year in production, having opened in 1989. The Ohio plant has built 5.9 million vehicles (falling just short of the six million mark) over the past 30 years, and currently produces the Honda CR-V, Acura RDX, and Acura MDX. But it isn't Honda's only factory in Ohio.
In fact, the Marysville Auto Plant is Honda's largest vehicle production facility in the US and was opened seven years prior in 1982. Now in its 37th year of operation, the Marysville plant has a chance to celebrate a major milestone of its own. Honda has just produced its 20 millionth automobile in Ohio.
Marysville is one of three Honda plants in Ohio including the aforementioned East Liberty factory and the Performance Manufacturing Center where the Acura NSX is built. Today, the Marysville Plant builts the Honda Accord, Honda CR-V, Acura ILX, and Acura TLX. On January 13, 2020, a white 2020 Platinum White Pearl Honda Accord Hybrid rolled off the assembly line, marking the 20 millionth vehicle built by Honda in the state of Ohio. The first Ohio-built Honda was an Accord sedan, so it seems fitting that the 20 millionth car would also be an Accord.
"Honda associates in Ohio have played a significant role in our US operations, and today we celebrate the production of 20 million high-quality cars and light trucks for our customers in Ohio, America and around the world," said Mitsugu Matsukawa, president of Honda of America Mfg. "This milestone not only showcases the success of our products, but the dedication, capability, and collaboration of our 15,000 Honda associates in Ohio."
Honda initially invested $35 million to build motorcycles in Marysville in 1979 and the investment in Ohio has grown to over $13 billion today. The 20 million vehicles produced in Ohio represent 75 percent of Honda's total US automobile production since 1982 (it also builds cars in Alabama and Indiana). The Marysville Auto Plant contributed 13,886,744 vehicles to the total, the East Liberty Auto Plant added 6,110,582 vehicles, and the low-volume Performance Manufacturing Center has built 2,674 vehicles.
