Honda Teases New EV With Cybertruck Shape

Teaser / Comments

And it's coming to the Consumer Electronics Show.

Honda just teased a new electric vehicle concept that will debut on January 9, 2024, at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Very few details were shared about the car, which will be a part of the "global Honda electric vehicle series." It's unclear if that means the car will be sold in the United States, but judging from the teaser image, this concept isn't close to production.

In the single shot, we can tell that the concept has a very odd shape that reminds us of the recently delivered Tesla Cybertruck. It has extremely sharp lines that end in a wedge-shaped front end with what appears to be a single headlight bar at the top. We can't imagine such a shape would ever reach production, but the Cybertruck got through US crash testing with its design, so what do we know?

Alongside the concept, Honda will show off "several key technologies" that demonstrate the company's transformation towards electrification. Honda plans to release 30 new EVs globally by 2030 with global sales targets set at two million units. By 2040, the Japanese brand wants to be 100% zero-emissions in North America.

Honda has quite a long way to go to reach that goal, as the Honda Prologue, the company's first dedicated EV in North America is not set to arrive until next year. Even then, the Prologue is based on the GM Ultium platform that underpins the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Honda recently cut ties with GM to build more affordable EVs. If this concept does reach production, it would likely use an in-house Honda platform.

Honda has shown off some cool EV concepts lately, so we are interested in hearing more about this CES reveal, including the car's name. The automaker has provided some big surprises recently, including a new Prelude that made Honda fans feel like there was hope for the future of sports cars. We imagine some of these electrified products will make an appearance at Honda's CES booth, along with an opportunity to ride the Motocompacto, a small electric scooter that folds into a briefcase.

The press conference will include speeches from Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe and Global EVP Shinji Aoyama, so clearly, this is an important reveal to tune in for.
