It might have something to do with AWD.
Cars.co.za recently put out a video of a BMW M135idrag racing against the Audi S3 sedan. The results were pretty surprising. The visually stunning S3 derives its power from a 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out 276 horses. TheBMW M135i, on the other hand, uses a 320 horsepower 3.0-liter turbochargedstraight-six. Given that the BMW packs 44 more hp, one might think it would bethe clear winner in this competition. The Killarney Raceway in South Africa is apparently slippery, which plays a role.
It's worth noting that the hp figures on the S3 are different from the US-spec model. Perhaps it would have been more fair for these pertrolheads to put the Audi S3 against a more similar opponent, the BMW M1239 xDrive. Regardless, it's interesting to see how important traction is for straight line performance.
