GM shared some photos of the new Hummer SUV having some fun in Moab.
The GMC HUMMER EV, or the GMC Hummer EVfor those of you that like shouting less, is clearly set to be the new off-road king. We've all seen why. The Crab Walk feature is almost wholly unique to this EV off-roader - rivals are trying to play catch-up - and should make taking on the trails a little easier, at least on narrower trails. After all, the massive truck is more than seven feet wide. GMC's newest EV was also built with tough angles in mind, both in front and in back. But for those who are less inclined towards the pickup's styling, an SUV is on the way, and it looks to be just as capable as the pickup.
GM's President, Mark Reuss, shared these photos of the new Hummer EV SUV testing its off-road prowess, picking no other place but the Jeep Wrangler's favorite playground, the Moab desert in Utah.
Photos often don't do off-roading justice, owing to the technical nature of the activity, but it does help us understand the new SUV version of the Hummer a little better.
In his LinkedIn post, Reuss brings up a few of the new EV's off-road talking points. One of those is the new truck's "aggressive" departure angle. He's right, mind you; 49 degrees is an extremely aggressive departure angle, something you can see in the photos above. The rear bumper of the EV is short, barely reaching halfway down the tires. It's also scooped upwards aggressively to further help with clearance.
Now, we also know that the SUV's extra body panels won't affect the turning radius. Reuss said in his post that the Hummer's 35.4-foot turning radius is unchanged. That owes largely to the rear-steer function on all Hummer EVs. From the photos, it also looks like the SUV's suspension geometry is just as impressive as the pickup's.
As of now, Reuss says production is set for early 2023. That should be right on target for the 2024 model year SUV. Pricing for the SUV is set to be identical to the truck's $79,995 MSRP. However, we're sure that some special first-edition-style models will bring the price up for those that can afford them. We're betting it stays the same as the truck there as well, with the lineup topping out at $99,995.
